What's new in Talanoa

🐛 Fixes & polish

• [IMAP] Read state finally sticks. Mail marked read by you or by a rule stays read after sync and when you switch inboxes.
• Infinite scroll in Today. Older messages keep loading as you scroll. If archive, delete, or the unread filter shortens the list, it loads more instead of stopping.
• Send toasts. Sent and error toasts now dismiss themselves, and every toast has a close button.

🐛 Fixes & polish

• Attachment limits per provider. 25MB on Gmail and Yahoo, 20MB on Outlook and iCloud, 10MB on unknown IMAP servers. You get told before the send, not a bounce after.
• Send now. Skip the undo delay straight from the toast.
• Inbox only for sender cleanups. Archive, trash or done all from a sender view skips messages you’ve already dealt with.
• Notifications. No more repeated push for the same email, and new-email notifications that were silently swallowed now come through on Gmail, Outlook and IMAP.
• [IMAP] Read and starred sync. Servers without CONDSTORE now pull read and starred state back from the server, so changes made in another client show up.
• [IMAP] Attachment previews. Previews no longer mix up files between messages.

✅ Your board, everywhere

Your todo board and email notes now stay in sync between desktop and mobile.

• Cross-device sync. Tasks and notes follow you from phone to desktop and back. A task stays linked to the same email, whether you use Gmail, Outlook or IMAP.
• Pair a new device. Scan a QR code in the desktop app to bring your whole board to a new phone.
• Instant updates. Check off a task on your phone and see it update on desktop within seconds.

📎 Attachments & previews

Attachments are finally readable at a glance, and you can open most files without leaving the app.

• Thumbnails that mean something. PDFs show their first page, spreadsheets show a snippet of the sheet, Word files show the opening lines. No more wall of identical red badges, and everything stays sharp in dark mode too.
• Full previews in the app. Open PDFs, Excel, Word, and text files without leaving Talanoa. Search and zoom PDFs, flip through spreadsheet tabs, read documents as a page. Already downloaded files open instantly.
• Preview from inside a message. Quick view on an attachment opens the same full-screen preview as the gallery. Arrow keys flip through the rest of that email’s files; double-click and Space work too.

• Search improved New search engine implemented for better performance + remote search too.
• [IMAP] Delete or archive on one device, gone on the other. Mail you remove no longer sticks around on your other devices after a refresh.
• Unread filter stays accurate. Read emails no longer slip into the list while a sync is running.

• ⚡ Autocomplete rebuilt — ~340ms → ~15ms per keystroke, all connected accounts, real names kept.
• 🖼️ Images — Ask before displaying / Always display in Settings → General (desktop & mobile); remote images actually blocked when you ask.
• ✅ Tasks — Mark complete from the board without opening the card.
• Polish — Transient auth failures no longer stick as “reconnect”; newsletter blockquotes stay visible; pasted images fit the column; monogram avatars; inbox lists update live on sync.

🐛 Fixes & polish

• 👥 Smarter recipient autocomplete — Suggests people you’ve emailed, not just incoming senders. Skips your address and noreply mailboxes. ~137ms → ~0.3ms per keystroke on a 50k-message mailbox.
• Unread filter sync — Messages read, archived or trashed elsewhere leave the list instead of staying with a stale dot. Fixed on sync and window focus.

✨ New & improved

• 📅 Inline RSVP on calendar invites — Google Calendar invitations show a banner with one-click Yes / No / Maybe and a conflict check against your synced calendars for that day.
• 🖼️ Attachment gallery — Attachments now have a grid view with real image thumbnails, a zoom slider to size the tiles, and an in-app lightbox to browse them full-resolution.
• ⚡ Instant quick search — The / palette runs its queries faster now.
• 🔎 Search your mail server — When the local index comes up empty, the search palette now offers a “Search in email server” button that queries Gmail, Outlook and IMAP directly.
• 🚫 Unsubscribes tab — Settings → Rules now lists every unsubscribe and block you’ve made, with a one-click cancel that also removes the server-side filter.
• 🔍 Filter your rules — A search field on both the Rules and Unsubscribes tabs filters by sender, recipient, labels or category.
• 📥 Load more from a sender — The sender view can now pull up to 50 older emails straight from the mail server, past what’s stored locally.
• 🙂 Real account avatars — Personal Gmail accounts now show your Google profile photo in the sidebar and settings, while Workspace accounts keep their company favicon.

🐛 Fixes & polish

• Full sync now retries on rate limits, quota errors, 5xx and transient network failures instead of giving up.
• Attachment quick view worked only on macOS — on Linux and Windows it now opens the file with your system’s default app.

📱 Big news — the mobile app is here, in alpha

Talanoa is coming to your phone. The mobile app for iOS & Android is now in alpha, and I’m looking for testers.

The Talanoa you know — Teammates, People, your custom sections and Notifications, multi-account with a unified inbox, full-text search, light & dark themes and local only.

Want in? Open Settings → Devices in the desktop app and hit “I want to be a beta tester”.

✨ New & improved

• ⭐ Star your favorite views — Every view in the inbox menu (Sent, Drafts, Snoozed…) now has a star. Starred views show up in the left sidebar right below your Pins, one click away — saved per account.

• ✍️ Quotes in the composer — Type > at the start of a line to turn it into a quote block. Enter continues the quote, a double Enter exits it, and it renders properly in your recipient’s inbox too.
• 🖋️ Your first signature becomes the default — The first signature you add to an account, whether created by hand or imported from your provider, is now automatically set as that account’s default.

🐛 Fixes & polish

• Unified inbox: opening a sender from another account now shows their conversations instead of an empty view — and sender actions (archive all, unsubscribe, block…) now target the right mailbox.
• Unified todo board: opening a task’s email from another account now displays the conversation instead of coming up empty.
• Support chat: your message clears the instant you hit send — attachments upload in the background, and mashing Enter can’t send it twice.
• The Updates settings tab now looks right in dark mode, and its button only says “Download now” when an update is actually ready.

• 💬 In-app support chat — Need help or want to share an idea? You can now chat with me directly from the app: start a conversation, attach screenshots, follow its status, and get notified when I reply. Find it in your profile menu.
• ✅ One todo board for all your accounts — Your todo board is now shared across all accounts by default, so every task lives in one place. Prefer separate boards? Switch back to per-account mode in Settings.
• ⇧ Select a range with Shift-click — Tick one email’s checkbox, hold Shift and click another: everything in between gets selected. Batch triage just got a lot faster.
• 🧠 Filters that stick — The Today view now remembers your “Unread only” and “Archived only” filters per account, even after a restart.
• 🔋 Lighter in the background — When Talanoa isn’t focused, background sync slows to a calmer pace and picks right back up the moment you return — easier on your battery and network.

• Opening an email by clicking it now reliably marks it as read everywhere.
• With “Unread only” on, emails you’ve just read now leave the Today list when you navigate away, instead of lingering.
• The Help menu moved into the profile dropdown — one less button crowding the sidebar.

• 📌 Pin your emails — Pin any email to keep it at hand, with a dedicated Pins view in the sidebar. Pins sync with your provider’s native flags — Gmail stars, Outlook flags and IMAP flags — so they follow you everywhere.
• 🔍 Search everywhere at once — When the unified inbox is on, search now looks across all your accounts, not just one.
• ✍️ Signatures that follow the sender — Switching the send-from account in the composer now switches to that account’s default signature automatically.
• 🔗 See where links lead — Hovering a link in an email now shows its full URL at the bottom of the reading pane, so you know where you’re going before you click.
• 📄 Cleaner pasting — Pasted text in the composer now keeps Gmail-like paragraph spacing instead of collapsing or stretching.

• Reopening a draft no longer shows “undefined” instead of your saved text.
• Keyboard shortcuts now work on non-Latin keyboard layouts (Cyrillic, Greek, and more).
