🌅 The big one: Talanoa 1.0
Talanoa is now 1.0. For a long time, connecting a first account dropped you on a progress bar, then in an inbox full of settings you had to find on your own. A lot of the features people love the most (the private AI, the calendar, the widgets, the mobile app) were only discovered weeks later, by chance. I wanted the first ten minutes to show what Talanoa can do, and to set it up the way you like while your mail syncs.
🧭 A tour while your mail syncs
Your first sync now runs under a short tour, and every page sets the real thing. Pick your look (system, light or dark), then how your inbox reads: the layout, the reading mode and one row per conversation, next to a live preview that rearranges itself as you choose.
- An AI that stays on your computer. Talanoa looks at your machine and recommends a local model, or lets you use an AI agent you already have. Turn on translation and Learn my writing style on the same page. The download keeps going in the footer while you move on, and your writing style is learned by itself once the model and your sent emails are there.
- Ask your inbox anything. Turn on Ask AI and see what it can answer. The search model downloads and your inbox is indexed in the background, and Talanoa tells you when it is ready.
- Notifications, your way. Say yes or no once, then choose which messages ring and count on the badge: people only, or everything.
- Final touches. Remote images (ask first, or always show), Talanoa as your default mail app, and launch at login.
- Your calendar, right in your inbox. Connect Google or Outlook Calendar from the tour, then pick the widgets beside your inbox.
- Talanoa in your pocket. A QR code takes your phone to the mobile app.
- You’re all set. The last page shows
Cmd+K (Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux), the one shortcut that opens everything, and Open my inbox takes you in.
Hover the dots at the top to see each step’s name, and click one to go back to a step you already saw. Adding another account later gets a shorter tour: its color and reading mode, its calendar, and whether it shares your to-do list or gets its own.
✨ New & improved
- Get the mobile app from Settings. Settings → Devices now walks you through installing Talanoa on your phone: scan a code with your iPhone to join the TestFlight beta, or send your Google Play email from Support to join the Android beta. Then one scan brings your accounts and settings over.
🐛 Fixes & polish
- Inbox actions never freeze the app. Archiving, trashing or marking an email as read while a sync was busy could freeze Talanoa until the sync let go. These actions now always run in the background.
- The sender panel opens instantly. On a large mailbox with a lot of drafts, opening a conversation could freeze the app for up to 15 seconds while it looked for drafts to that sender. It takes a moment now.
- Trash all really empties the list. After Trash all or Archive all in the sender panel, some emails could come back into the list and stay there. The list now stays empty, and shows the real result once the action is done, even when it fails.
