How to connect your iCloud account
Add your iCloud email to Talanoa in about 3 minutes. One special password from Apple, a few clicks, and you're done.
- Time needed
- About 3 minutes
- What you need
- Your iCloud email address, and a phone or computer where you're signed in to Apple
First, a tiny secret about Apple 🍏
Apple is very protective of your email. It’s a bit like a bouncer at a club.
If you give Talanoa your normal Apple password, the bouncer will say: “Nope. Not you.”
Instead, Apple wants you to make a special password just for Talanoa. Apple calls it an App-Specific Password. Think of it as a spare key you hand to one friend. That friend can open the door, but they don’t get your main key.
The good news: making one takes about one minute. Let’s go.
Step 1: Make your special password at Apple
- Go to account.apple.com and sign in with your Apple account.
- Click Sign-In and Security.
- Click App-Specific Passwords.
- Click the + button (or Generate an app-specific password).
- Apple asks for a name. Type Talanoa. (You could also type “My favorite email app”. We won’t tell anyone.)
- Apple shows you a password that looks like this:
abcd-efgh-ijkl-mnop
👉 Copy it right away. Apple shows it only once. After that, it’s gone for good, like the last cookie in the jar.
Don’t see “App-Specific Passwords”? That means two-factor authentication isn’t turned on yet. It’s the thing where Apple sends a little code to your iPhone when you sign in. Turn it on in your Apple account settings, then come back here.
Step 2: Add your account in Talanoa
If this is your first time opening Talanoa: click Other email provider.
If you already have an account in Talanoa: click the + at the bottom of your accounts list, on the left side of the window.
Then:
- Type your full name. This is the name people see when you send them an email.
- Type your iCloud email address. It ends in
@icloud.com,@me.comor@mac.com. - Click Continue.
Talanoa will say “iCloud Mail – Detected automatically”. Yes, it recognized Apple all by itself. Clever little app.
Step 3: Paste your special password
- In the App Password box, paste the password you copied in Step 1.
- Click Test & Add Account.
Talanoa knocks on Apple’s door to check that everything works. It only takes a few seconds.
And… that’s it! 🎉 Your emails will start showing up. If you have lots of emails, the first time can take a little while. Good moment for a coffee.
Something went wrong?
“It says my password is wrong.” Make sure you used the special password from Step 1, not your normal Apple password. That’s the mistake almost everyone makes, so don’t worry.
“I lost my special password.” No problem. Go back to Step 1 and make a new one. You can make as many as you want.
“I already have one account and Talanoa asks me to upgrade.” The free version of Talanoa lets you use one account. To add more, you need Talanoa Pro.
