How to keep Talanoa up to date

Talanoa updates itself in the background. Here's how to install a new version, check by hand, and see what's new.

What you need
Talanoa, and an internet connection

New things arrive all the time ✨

We improve Talanoa very often: new features, small fixes, extra polish. Like a garden that gets watered every week.

The good news: on Mac and Windows, you don’t have to do much. Talanoa checks for new versions by itself, in the background, and downloads them for you.

Step 1: Say yes to the update

When a new version is ready, a small banner appears at the top of the window: New version available.

  1. Click Update now.
  2. Talanoa says Stopping sync…, then Restarting….
  3. It closes and opens again, all fresh.

And… that’s it! 🎉 Nothing to download, nothing to drag anywhere. Your emails and settings stay exactly as they were.

Step 2 (optional): Check by hand

Curious if there’s something new right now?

  1. Open Settings (Cmd+, on Mac, Ctrl+, on Windows and Linux).
  2. Click Updates in the list on the left.
  3. You see your Current Version. If you’re up to date, Talanoa says You’re up to date!
  4. If a new version exists, click Download now (or Check for Updates). Wait for Update Downloaded, then click Install & Restart.

If you use Linux: automatic updates aren’t available there. On the Updates page, click Download from Website and install the new version like you did the first time. See Download and install Talanoa.

See what’s new

After an update, Talanoa shows a What’s New window with the latest changes. Read it, or click Continue to get back to your emails.

Missed it? You can open it again any time:

  1. Click the gear icon at the very bottom of the left bar.
  2. Click Changelog.

The version you’re using is written at the bottom of that same menu. You can also read every past update on the changelog page.

Something went wrong?

“The Updates page says Failed to check for updates.” Check your internet connection, then click Try again.

“I clicked Update now but it’s taking a while.” Talanoa first finishes what it was doing with your emails, so nothing gets lost. Give it a moment. Good time to stretch your legs.

“I’m on Linux and nothing updates by itself.” That’s normal. Download the new version from the Updates page or from our download page.
