How to download and install Talanoa
Get Talanoa on your Mac, Windows or Linux computer in a few minutes. Pick the right file, open it, and you're in.
- Time needed
- About 3 minutes
- What you need
- A Mac, a Windows PC or a Linux computer, and an internet connection
Let’s move in 🏡
Talanoa is an app that lives on your computer, like a little house for your emails. Before you can move in, you need to download it and set it up.
The good news: it’s free to download, and there’s no card to enter. It takes about as long as making toast.
Step 1: Go to the download page
- Open talanoa.email/download.
- The page guesses which computer you have and puts the right button first. Clever little page.
If it guessed wrong, no problem. Just pick your computer in the list below.
Step 2: Pick the right file
If you have a Mac:
- Most Macs from late 2020 and after have an Apple chip (M1, M2, M3, M4…). Pick macOS — Apple Silicon.
- Older Macs have an Intel chip. Pick macOS — Intel.
- Not sure? Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen, then About This Mac. Next to “Chip”, you’ll see either “Apple M…” or “Intel”.
You need macOS 12 Monterey or newer.
If you have Windows: pick Windows — x64. You need Windows 10 or newer.
If you have Linux:
- On Ubuntu, Debian and their cousins, pick Linux — Debian / Ubuntu.
- On Fedora and Red Hat, pick Linux — Fedora / RHEL.
Step 3: Install it
On a Mac:
- Open the file you just downloaded (it’s in your Downloads folder).
- A small window opens with the Talanoa icon and your Applications folder.
- Drag the Talanoa icon onto the Applications folder.
- Open Talanoa from your Applications folder (or search for it with
Cmd+Space).
The first time, your Mac may ask “Are you sure you want to open it?”. Click Open. It’s just your Mac being careful.
On Windows:
- Open the file you just downloaded.
- That’s it. Talanoa installs itself and opens on its own. No long list of “Next” buttons.
If Windows shows a blue box saying it protected your PC, click More info, then Run anyway.
On Linux:
- Double-click the file you downloaded. Your software center opens.
- Click Install and type your computer password if asked.
- Find Talanoa in your apps menu.
And… that’s it! 🎉 Talanoa opens and asks you to connect your first email account.
What’s next?
Pick your email to connect:
- Connect Gmail
- Connect Outlook
- Connect iCloud
- Connect Yahoo, AOL, Fastmail & co
- Connect any other email
Then Talanoa gives you a short welcome tour while your emails arrive.
Talanoa keeps itself up to date. New versions arrive on their own, so you only install it once. See Keep Talanoa up to date.
Something went wrong?
“My Mac says the app can’t be opened.” Check that you picked the right file for your chip (Step 2). If you did, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to Talanoa.
“I downloaded it, but I can’t find it.” Look in your Downloads folder. On a Mac, make sure you dragged Talanoa into Applications, and open it from there, not from the little download window.
“I have a Windows computer with an Arm chip.” The Arm version for Windows is coming soon. Keep an eye on the download page.
